❄️ Home Cooked Calm ❄️ Learning to medita ❄️ Home Cooked Calm ❄️

Learning to meditate at home is a hugely worthwhile time investment. By meditating even for just a few minutes each day you create order in your mind and this well ordered calmer mind enhances the way you perform in your work and family responsibilities - and increases your overall capacity for joy.

I wrote my book @inhaleexhalerepeatbook in order to show you specifically how to use meditation in each different part of an average 24hour working day. So I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to make meditation part of life not just an exotic activity. It’s very easy to read and not boring 😊, illustrated with lots of concise tips and practices you can dip in and out of.

For example, there are meditations in there for housework, gardening, bath time, bedtime, work meetings, creative work, breakfast, lunch, evenings in, and meditations on art and creativity for weekends.

You don’t need any products to meditate at home but some people find they enjoy having a special cushion/chair to sit on while they meditate and a nice aromatherapy scent - @nealsyardremedies have a lovely meditation rollerball fragrance called ‘Meditation’

Some people enjoy using guided meditations, I have several on my website you are welcome to try out! Videos and articles.

The timer function on a smart phone also works well if you are someone who finds it helpful to time things and you are wanting to know when 2,3, or 10 minutes are up. ( Tip: more time isn’t better. If 10 minutes seems boring, just do 2 minutes but do them with enthusiasm and curiosity 💯)

I also teach live classes every Wednesday morning (BST) and they are a great way to improve your meditation if you’re doing it at home with a book. I’ll share more about real life tuition vs books or apps in my next blog at Emma Mills London so do join the newsletter list to learn when it’s out.

How have you picked up your meditation practice this new year? What have you been getting up to, do share your tips.

If you have a topic or question you’d like to see covered over on the EML blog please do DM or comment. Xx Emma

🔮 Future Fantasy? My work and interests mean I 🔮 Future Fantasy? My work and interests mean I spend lots of time considering what’s happening here now. You know, this very reality right under our noses. It’s quite something!

Yet this week I’ve also been thinking about the futuristic sci-fi stories I’ve enjoyed over the years. ( Brave New World, The Time Machine, Blade Runner, The Machine Stops, for example)

Many of them paint a picture of the future that’s high tech and robotic. Some are frighteningly dystopian and others less so.

So much has changed during 2020 and I’ve been considering what kind of vision I hold for futuristic life on earth, and whether or not I fancy changing it at all 😂

I wonder if there are any futurist movies or books you have read that paint a beautiful picture? Or maybe you can create one? Here’s a fanciful question to take on...

Q. Just imagine that you had the ability to create a planet, and populate it with living creatures, including human beings. What sort of world would you create and what qualities would it express?

Let me know what your imaginary future fantastic world would feature. Answers on a postcard!

At this time of year the Celts celebrated the turn At this time of year the Celts celebrated the turning of the wheel of life, hope, renewal and regeneration. And in traditions far and wide Winter solstice is seen as a time of celebration. Yay! The sun has returned!

As the suns warmth begins the build from now into Spring, the seeds in the earth (and in our hearts) can hope for sunnier spells ahead.

Today marks the longest night of the year here in the northern hemisphere, which means that thank goodness - things can only get lighter and warmer.

Whatever your beliefs and tradition, I want to wish you well this Winter Solstice and thank you for your custom, attention and mindfulness enthusiasm this year - and what a year it has been.

With love and solidarity,

Emma

Netflix and Chill Out 🧘🏻‍♀️🍿 Chris Netflix and Chill Out 🧘🏻‍♀️🍿

Christmas is on the horizon and many of us are spending our evenings at home instead of out socialising so I wanted to share my list of the best mindfulness movies to inspire your evening entertainment.

It started in 2012 as a mindful movie list, but has grown over the years to include not only mindfulness films (Like ‘7 Years In Tibet’) but movies that are creative (All things Almodovar), existentially curious ( Never Mind The Huckabees) visually beautiful (Baraka) or alternative in outlook in some way (Wim Wenders)

Reading classical literature filled with complex characters is challenging to our brains, which can otherwise become used to anticipating certain behaviour patterns from particular types of people. I wonder if researchers have found similar in the field of cinema? I think that’s one of the things I like about European cinema.

What do you think? Do you like any of the movies in the list? What should I add?

I keep the list updated each year, so do take a look (the link to view or is in my insta bio now @emmamillslondon )

Let me know if there is a quirky, beautiful, mindful, spiritual, alternative movie that should be on the list.

There are a few Youtube channels that could perhaps be on there too.

Happy Friday,

Emma

P. S. One of my best girlfriends moved to Sydney this Summer and she sent me her #Almodovar dvd set for safe keeping ( pictured 👆🏼) Lucky me!

I love ❤️ all things meditation, mindfulness a I love ❤️ all things meditation, mindfulness and wellbeing and over the years they have brought me such happiness. And that’s why I want to share them with you.

I’ve been thrilled in recent years to hear that so many people have been advised by their doctor ( or therapist ) to learn about mindfulness.

Often this is because of:

🔹High blood pressure
🔹Coping with severe ill health or recovery after ill health
🔹Anxiety, worry or over thinking
🔹Stress and burnout
🔹Low mood
🔹IBS and other stress related symptoms
🔹Trouble sleeping
🔹A need for healthier lifestyle

No one yet has been referred to me because they want to find out who they really are and what the meaning of life is (lol) but a lot of people do start meditating for that reason also.

But then what to do? How and where to learn more?

There are lots of ways to begin. Books, classes, courses or video lessons or podcast. There are many approaches to meditation, such as TM and mindfulness for example. All of which can be very effective in their own ways. And all take you to the same endpoint one way or another.

I’ve worked with lots of people over the years and I’m sure that depending on your personality and sensibilities there will be a style that works really well for you. One that feels natural and enjoyable.

If you aren’t sure if it’s working or if you’re doing it right I recommend joining a class or taking private coaching as working with a teacher can really help.

If you’d like to learn more but aren’t sure where to start you might enjoy my fortnightly newsletter, it’s full of tips, ideas and guidance ( sign up in my bio)

alternatively, you’re welcome to email me your queries at: emma@emmamillslondon.com and I’ll point you in the right direction.

Happy Tuesday

With love and respect,

Emma 💚

Gosh... #Throwback to sunnier climbs! I’m absolu Gosh... #Throwback to sunnier climbs! I’m absolutely loving where we are in the season. The Autum sky, the quiet woodlands.. even the cozy dark evenings. I’m making the most of the slower pace by doing lots of reading and writing.

This week I’ve been writing about the topic of imagination as part of book 2. It’s been wonderfully curious! I’ve also been busy writing lots of posts for you over at Emma Mills London (psychology, recipes - do take a look) and talking all things mental health and mindfulness to my groups over on Zoom.

Summer feels like a million years ago now, but here are a few #throwback snaps to a fine Summers day meandering along country lanes in this lovely old car. The chap who owns it told me It’s 100 years old this year. Car designers of the past had such wild imagination.

What are you doing to make the most of quieter evenings at home this season?

Veg Confetti 🎊 Sprinkle it here and there… Veg Confetti 🎊

Sprinkle it here and there… and be happy!

I love making variations of this tantalising veg confetti. (Also known as tapenade.) For my latest mix I used:

1 red fajita chilli
1 red hot chilli
1 medium tomato
3 garlic cloves
8 black olives (stones removed)
a drizzle of olive oil
a squeeze of fresh lemon
1 small/ medium sized red or white onion chopped
A handful of spinach/kale leaves ( I used 3 small/medium sized cavalo nero kale leaves and 5 small/medium rainbow chard leaves as they are growing in the garden here at the moment.

To make this confetti I add all ingredients to the food processor and blend until you get a chunky dip consistency. ( but you can also hand chop)

With all the raw garlic and fresh chillies, this dish makes for a very tasty, spicy, garlicky sensation!

Spread onto toast, or crackers or serve as a garnish with meals. If you don’t like chillies, you can make the same mix without them. Olives blended with garlic and soft green kale leaves makes a lovely addition to any meal.

What’s for dinner at your house?

For more recipes and mindful living inspiration you might enjoy my fortnightly newsletter. You can join the list at the link in my insta bio now, or by visiting EmmaMillsLondon.com

☕️ Many of us live with a feeling that somethi ☕️ Many of us live with a feeling that something, somehow is missing and that this moment we find ourselves in isn’t enough or things aren’t as they should be.

Sometimes the source of our lack is obvious to us, for example: stressful life situations, ( global health issues) health, family, love life, finances, endless responsibilities and to-do lists, dissatisfaction with something or other, things to organise.

Other times and more commonly, the sense of lack isn’t about anything in particular and instead is a quiet unease in the background that accompanies and harries many of the day the day things we do - which actually, in themselves are quite lovely and enjoyable.

In times like these having a meditation or self awareness based practice can really help you to spot what’s happening.

All of this talk reminds me of a quote from Kurt Vonnegut:

‘And I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.’

🧘🏻‍♀️ Do You Have Slow-Happiness? By 🧘🏻‍♀️ Do You Have Slow-Happiness?

By the time someone decides to learn meditation it’s likely that they are either a truth seeker with an interest in the nature of existence, or they are looking for some kind relief. Or both which is quite common.

It’s understandable then, that by the time they sit down to meditate they want to find relief from the pressures of life as quickly as possible. Yet I can’t help but think that one of the best things meditation has to offer is slow-happiness.

To explain the difference between fast and slow-happiness let’s use physical fitness as a metaphor... to learn more on this check the latest post on Emma Mills London 🌷
